Tumut Showground Get-Together

TUMUT SHOWGROUND GET-TOGETHER

30 October 2008 T0 5 November 2008

Preamble:

  • It was the intention of Southern NSW Delegates to be at Tumut Showground on Tuesday 28 October 2008, to tidy up the loose ends, prior to the commencement of the Tumut Get-together of Thursday 30 October 2008. Consequences, beyond the Delegates control, with one of the Delegates being seriously ill, the commencement of the Rally became a team event.
  • Firstly, one couple arranged the opening of the Showground gates, amenities, etc. with the Trust Secretary, on Tuesday 28 October. Along with another member, they also had to do some cleaning of the amenities, hot water at the showers & supervised the cattle breaking thru the temporary fencing.
  • On Wednesday 29 October, the past Southern NSW Delegates arrived and settled into the initial management of the Rally, including welcoming and allocating sites to the Club Members, organising the Meeting House with coffee and tea, etc., the Opening Address Thursday 30 October, without the promised Guest Speaker from Tumut Visitors Centre & arranging the activities on Friday 31/10.

Comments on Rally:

  • Southern NSW Delegates arrived at lunchtime, Friday 31 October and were briefed by the past Delegate & the team of the first couple of days.
  • An Activities Report follows, detailing a day-to-day comment of the activities enjoyed by those attending the Rally.
  • There were 21 member's rigs, being 41 Club Members and 1 visitor rig with 2 people.

  • Those attending the Rally were invited to put into a collection box; a list or receipts of monies spent at Tumut during their stay and we are happy to report that a total of $12,850, say $13,000, was counted.
  • The past Delegate arranged at least 4 games of bowls at the Tumut Bowling Club. The principal game being the Melbourne Cup morning & lunch of which 15 Club Members enjoyed the shared competition with the locals.
  • Melbourne Cup morning was also the golf and although only 3 members attended the competition was every bit as keen as the bowlers were!
  • Harry Hill, Tumut's 82 year old outdoor historian, retired headmaster & author; was a very popular entertainer with the Members, firstly on Friday's "Happy Hour" with his talk on Hume & Hovell, & then on Wednesday the final night of the Rally, when he gave an old fashion "slide show" on his official walk across the Australian Alps at the age of 62.
  • Saturday was a free day, and at night Club BBQ and welcome by the Southern NSW Delegates to the Rally.
  • On Sunday, the "hightlite" of the Tumut Get-together was the Tag-along to the Boggy Creek Show, Glenroy Heritage Park & Tumberumba Museum. In the tag-along we had 14 vehicles & 41 Members; at the end of the day "Happy Hour" was cancelled, as they were all ‘buggered' from an exceptional, interesting and varied day.
  • On Monday, 30 attended a short Tag-along to Thomas Boyd Trackhead on the Hume & Hovell Walking Track, where about 12 Members walked an hour or two along the Track, to return to a Club Sausage Sizzle Lunch. 16 Members, who did not attend the ‘Calcutta' at the RSL Club, enjoyed a game of Crazy Whist in the Meeting House.
  • Melbourne Cup was the flavour of the Day, with the treasurer running 2 ($2) sweeps & handing out the winnings at the Club Smorgasbord Dinner at the Tumut Bowling Club, where there were 37 Members (4 missing!) & 2 visitors in attendance; with a couple from WA officially being welcomed as Members to the Club.
  • Wednesday (the last day of the Rally) 33 Members, enjoyed a short Tag-along to Adelong Falls Heritage Mining Town, where local "old timer" Tom Wiles joined our group and gave us a running talk while we walked around the 1870 Gold Mine, with BYO lunch & then opened the interesting Adelong Museum.
  • It may be said that the Tumut Showground Get-together was a friendly and happy success, but future Rallies will not include 3 free meals, unless the Booking Fee is increased from $10 per van to say $10 per person.

Yours truly,

Southern NSW Delegates.
